What is Botox?

Contrary to stories in the media, Botulinum Toxin A is not food poisoning bacteria and you cannot get food poisoning from a Botox injection. Botulinum Toxin A was discovered as a toxin created by the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium, which is a cause of food poisoning.

The synthesized, medical grade Botulinum Toxin A used today has been safely used in medical practice for 30 years and is FDA approved. It was first used in children with spastic legs – the spasms were relaxed by a Botox injection. Borox has also been used to treat toticollis, which are painful spasms of the neck, and for oculogyric spasms – tics or involuntary movements or twitches of the eyes.

How Does Botox Eliminate Wrinkles?

The wrinkles caused by the pull of the muscles of facial expression are called “dynamic lines” because they are dynamic or move. In other words, these wrinkles and lines are caused by repeated motion of muscles of facial expression. Each time the muscle moves it pulls the skin into a wrinkle. After years of repeated motion, these wrinkles or lines become permanent.

Botox relaxes or quiets the muscles of facial expression. When the muscle is relaxed, the line or wrinkle caused by the muscle disappears.

Is this Wrinkle Treatment Right for Me?

The lines of facial expression that can be treated by Botox include the following:

  • Crow’s Feet: Lines on the cheek around the eyes
  • Frown Lines: The deep creases between your eyes at the base of your nose
  • Worry Lines: The creases running across your forehead
  • Bunny lines: The wrinkles at the base of your nose that wrinkle when you smile hard
  • Lip Lines: The wrinkles around your mouth when you purse your lips
  • Marionette Lines: The lines running from the corner of your mouth down to the jaw lie that pull the mouth down when you are angry or sad

What to Expect

Tiny amounts of Botulinum Toxin A are injected directly into the muscle that is causing the wrinkle or dynamic line. These injections are dosed in International Units (IU). Very small amounts of the solution are used.

Generally a treatment of 25 IUs is used to treat the crow’s feet and frown lines (5-6 IU in each side of the crow’s feet and 13-15 IUs in the frown lines). If worry lines are also treated, an additional 6.25 IUs are placed into each side of the forehead for an additional 12.5 IUs.

Very small amounts are used around the mouth to avoid any interference with mouth function. Generally only 1 or 2 IUs are used on the upper lip for lip wrinkles. After treatment you may not be able to whistle or drink through a straw temporarily, but those lip wrinkles will be gone. Only 1 IU is used on each marionette line-this treatment can reduce the mouth line and help reduce the jowl.

Small amounts of Botulinum Toxin A can also be used on the bands on the neck below the chin. 1 or 2 IUs in each band will reduce the folds or bands on the neck.

Does the Injection Hurt?

Many Botox injection specialists use a topical numbing cream which is very effective. Dermatologists use a cold Titanium Roller to cool the skin which is very effective at numbing the skin and which also helps prevent bruising. Patients often do not even feel the injection. If the patient has had a previous injection without these measures in a different office they are amazed at the difference.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

The cost of Botox differs and depends on the skill and expertise of your injection specialist. If you are offered a discount or deal be sure to ask how many units you are getting. Some low priced offers are using diluted Botulinum Toxin A which will not be as effective for removing wrinkles.

Botox injections are safe when done properly by an experienced and licensed physician who is an expert in facial anti-aging therapy. However there are potential side effects which can occur. Some are related to injection technique. The more common potential side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Flu-like illness
  • Nausea
  • Temporary eyelid droop

Eyelid droop is caused if the agent is injected too low in the forehead near the eyelid, and does not occur with the typical forehead injection.

Which Salivary Stone Treatment is Right for You?

Salivary stones can be a real nuisance and a literal “pain in the mouth.” The condition is variable, ranging from a calcification plugging up a gland to an infected salivary stone. Understandably, salivary stone treatment varies depending upon the severity of a problem. Since you need to know whether your condition would improve from conservative care or require advanced medical treatment, you should consult with an ENT (ear nose throat) specialist to confirm a diagnosis.

While home treatment might require a little more time by using over-the-counter remedies, physicians typically first recommend a conservative approach. If these fail or if your salivary stone problem keeps recurring, then you might be a candidate for minimally invasive treatment.

Laser Back Surgery in Valencia

Expert spinal surgeon Dr. Todd Gravori at ProMed SPINE performs expert laser back surgery in Valencia, CA. He performs these surgeries on an outpatient basis, and the patient is often able to go home and resume their daily activities on the same day as the surgery. Recovery time following a laser back surgery is minimal compared with open back surgery, with many patients fully recovering in only a matter of weeks or a few months, depending on the type and extent of the surgery.

Laser back surgery is done by means of a high-tech endoscope inserted through a small laser-cut incision about the size of a dime. This endoscope allows the surgeon to see in clear detail what needs to be done, and through advanced computerized navigation and nerve monitoring technology, the surgery is able to be performed without the need to cut any muscles or damage any tissue.

Botox for Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are those small lines that radiate out from our eyes as we age. The skin around our eyes is significantly thinner than the skin on the rest of the face, so wrinkles around the eyes are some of the first to appear. Especially if you have an animated face, crow’s feet can appear and deepen quickly. These lines can cause a person to look prematurely aged, and can detract from the eye itself, causing expressions to lose some of their brightness.

Del Mar Botox Experts

Botox Treatment in San Diego

A common treatment option for crow’s feet is Botox. Botox is FDA-approved for use on wrinkles around the eyes, and is proven to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet. When injected by a board-certified, experienced doctor, Botox is a safe, fast, effective solution for crow’s feet. If not injected by an experienced doctor, however, injecting Botox so near the eye can have side effects such as drooping eyelids. This is why it is extremely important to do your research when looking into having Botox done. It’s such a popular procedure that many places such as spas and salons offer injections, but it is much safer to have a Botox injection done by a licensed dermatologist.
